Will the cold season in your area affect the health, growth and appearance of your plants in any way? If it will, know the protection that the plants need to survive. Find out if the rainfall in your area will meet the plants' water requirements. Also, know the optimum pH levels of the landscape plants and the space they need once they mature. Do the plants shed fruits or pollen, and when do they do so? Plants with thorns are a nuisance if you have children. Ask if the root system of the landscape plants will affect your lawn and sidewalks.
Don't Ignore the Quality of the Plants on Sale
Now that you have identified the plants that suit your landscape's conditions, it's time to buy them. So, start by assessing the quality of the nursery plants. The landscape plants you carry home should be robust, healthy and thriving. No one wants to invest in landscape plants that attract diseases and pests into their garden or even those that are hard to establish. The survival rate of the low-quality plants is typically lower. Don't buy the cheapest landscape plants before you know how long they have been in the nursery or if they were neglected in some ways. The bark of the landscape trees shouldn't have soft areas, splits or other defects.
Adaptability to the Local Climate
Choosing plants that won't thrive in your garden is money wastage. Ensure the landscape you create doesn't depend on regular artificial pest and disease control practices, special seasonal protection and irrigation. Plants, shrubs and trees native to your local climate are the best to buy. This doesn't mean that native landscape plants and trees don't develop problems, though. For instance, native white pines make a beautiful landscape, but they don't thrive in areas with poor drainage. Don't plant them in an area with de-icing salts since the salts leave them with serious injuries.
The landscape plants or trees you buy will depend on the prevailing weather in your area. Find out if the landscape plant supplier has pest and disease-resistant cultivars or varieties. Always ensure you contact a reputable and competent plant supplier who knows the suitable planting methods and maintenance of all the plants in their wholesale nursery.
